How can a UK recruitment agency find employers that are hiring right now?

Track significant roles posted by employers and first-of-function hires. Lockley counted 662 significant roles posted this week, and 1,149 manager-level-and-above roles across 680 UK companies in September 2026.

Written from Lockley's index and the sources below, updated 10 October 2026.

A UK recruitment agency can find employers that are hiring right now by reading job postings by employer rather than by role, then separating the employers who already use agencies from those advertising directly. Direct postings for senior roles, and first hires in a function, are the best prospects: the employer has a live vacancy, a visible deadline and often no agency yet.

This guide covers the sources, how to filter them, and the numbers Lockley holds on the market this week.

Start with the postings

Public job postings are the cheapest evidence of live demand. Job boards and aggregators such as Adzuna publish them, and you can search by location, salary and title. The difficulty is volume: most postings are junior, repeated or placed by competitors, and reading them by hand will not find the few that are worth a call.

Narrow by seniority first. A manager-level or above role takes longer to fill, costs more to get wrong and is more likely to be handed to an agency on a fee. Narrow by employer second: a posting from the employer's own careers page is a better prospect than one from another agency.

Why first hires deserve their own list

A company advertising a function for the first time has no internal process for it and often no benchmark for pay. That is where an agency adds most. Lockley recorded 136 first-of-function hires in the week to 4 October 2026, and 316 across September. These are fewer than the general flow, which makes them practical to work through.

The same caution applies as ever: a first-of-function flag depends on holding the company's earlier postings, so verify before you rely on it.

Qualify before you call

Before dialling, check three things. First, is the company active and who are its directors, which Companies House shows free. Second, has it filed anything recently, such as a new charge or officer change, that suggests growth or restructuring. Third, what does its own website say about size and sector. This takes five minutes and changes the call from 'do you need staff' to a specific conversation about the role you saw.

Do not copy a role description back at the employer. Say what you noticed, ask who owns the hire and offer one useful thing, such as a salary range for the role in that region, which you must be able to support from your own placements.

The market you sell into

The agency market is crowded: the Lockley sector page records 50,274 active UK recruitment agencies, 6,977 of them formed in the last twelve months. Competition for the same postings is therefore intense, and speed and relevance matter more than volume. Reaching an employer on the day a senior role goes live, with a reason that shows you read it, is how a smaller agency gets ahead of larger ones.

How Lockley fits

Lockley reads job postings nightly with the other public records and gives a small team a short list each morning, each with the record that says why now. A 9am email brief carries the top three in full. It does not sell contact lists or send email for you.
