In the week from 1 October to 8 October 2026, most UK public-record signals that Lockley tracks fell against the week before, while funding rounds rose. Director changes filed fell from 55,538 to 33,557, new charges registered fell from 10,100 to 1,823, and funding rounds rose from 319 to 362. Planning-register new sites and public contracts ending were flat.

All counts are by the date on the record, not the date Lockley read it. The percentage changes below are Lockley's own arithmetic on the two weekly counts.

Companies House filings

Director changes and new charges both come from Companies House. Director changes filed fell by 39.6% week on week, and new charges registered fell by 82.0%. The charges drop is large enough that a single week should not be read as a trend. Lockley has not established the cause, and weekly counts of filings can move for reasons unrelated to business activity, such as the timing of batches of filings.

For a seller, the practical point is that the count of companies with a fresh charge or director change is a pool, not a rate to chase. A smaller week still contains companies with a real reason to be called.

Hiring

Significant roles posted fell from 637 to 422, and first-of-function hires from 150 to 104. Both come from job postings, with data from Adzuna. Lockley's job records begin in September 2026, so first-of-function counts reflect roles in a function the company has not been seen to hire for since then.

Recruiters should note that 104 first-of-function hires in a week is a small, workable list. It is not a market-wide hiring figure.

Contracts, sites and funding

Public contracts awarded fell from 94 to 81. Public contracts ending were 17 in both weeks, from Contracts Finder end dates. New sites from planning registers were 51 against 52. Funding rounds, drawn from Companies House and public announcements, rose from 319 to 362, the one signal up on the week.

Contracts ending is a particularly small pool. At 17 a week, each company is worth individual attention, for example by a supplier who could bid for the re-let.

How to use this

Weekly totals tell you the size of the pool, not whether to call. The useful unit is the individual company and the record behind it. Lockley reads these sources nightly and gives a small team a short list each morning, each with a link to the record so it can be checked.
