UK business signals in the week to 4 October 2026: hiring, charges, contracts

Director changes, new charges, hiring, public contracts and first hires compared week on week from Companies House, Contracts Finder and Adzuna records, with the exact counts.

Written from Lockley's index and the sources below, updated 10 October 2026.

In the week 27 September to 4 October 2026, UK public records show 43,850 director changes, 3,630 new charges registered, 662 significant roles posted, 136 first-of-function hires, 8 public contracts awarded and 20 public contracts reaching their end date. Against the week before, hiring rose while director changes, new charges, first hires and contract awards fell, and contract end dates rose from 2 to 20.

These are counts of dated public records, taken from Lockley's index. They describe filings and postings, not the health of the economy, and one week is a small sample. They are useful as a gauge of how much each type of signal a seller can act on is flowing.

Reading the changes

Director changes are the biggest flow by far. Officer filings cover appointments and resignations across the whole register, so 43,850 in a week reflects routine administration as much as business events. Without filtering by sector, size or role, the figure is too large to act on, which is why a buyer needs a method for narrowing it.

New charges registered fell from 8,163 to 3,630. A charge is a security registered against a company's assets, usually in connection with lending, so it can point to new borrowing. A week-to-week change of this size should not be over-read, since filing volumes move for reasons that are not visible in the register.

Contract awards fell from 50 to 8, while contract end dates rose from 2 to 20. These measure different things: awards are when a notice records a supplier winning, end dates are when a contract term finishes. Neither is a reliable trend from a single week.

The coverage behind the counts

The index holds 5,576,889 active UK companies, every company Companies House lists as active, counted on 4 October 2026. Of those, 550,929 have a website on record, found and confirmed rather than guessed. Lockley has written 194,782 company cards, one for each company whose website was read, and 14,706 companies have named people on record from Companies House and company websites.

Put simply, the register is large but the set of companies you can read about beyond their filings is much smaller. Dividing the figures, about 9.9 per cent of active companies have a confirmed website, and about 35.4 per cent of those have been read. These two ratios are our arithmetic from the counts above.

How a seller can use this

Pick the signal that matches your offer and watch its weekly flow. A lender or broker cares about charges. A recruiter cares about hiring and first hires. A bid consultant or equipment financier cares about contracts. A professional-services firm may watch director changes for a new decision-maker.

Then do the work that counts: filter the flow to your sector and size, open the underlying record and write a first line that cites it. Lockley does this reading every night and links each finding to its source. It does not sell contact lists.
