Written from Lockley's index and the sources below, updated 21 October 2026.
In the week 13 to 20 October 2026, hiring was the one broad signal that rose sharply: 508 significant roles were posted, against 343 the week before. Most other public-record signals fell, some steeply. New charges registered at Companies House dropped from 6,906 to 2,062, and funding rounds from 818 to 430. This page sets out the counts from Lockley's index, what changed, and how a UK seller might act on it.
How the week compares
The table gives each count for the week 13 to 20 October 2026 and the week 6 to 13 October 2026, by the date on the record, with the difference worked out from the two figures.
Hiring was the exception. Significant roles rose by 165 and first-of-function hires by 12. Every other signal in the set fell, which is common after a busy week, and is covered in more detail in our note on why weekly signal counts swing.

What a fall in a count does and does not mean
A lower count does not mean the signal has stopped being useful. A charge registered last week is still a charge, and the company behind it is still worth reading. What changes is how many fresh records there are to choose from. With 2,062 new charges rather than 6,906, a seller working that signal has a smaller pool this week and should lean harder on filtering by sector and size.
The new-sites count shows the same effect. Planning registers recorded 71 new sites this week and 449 the week before. A team selling to companies opening premises will find fewer fresh sites, so older ones that have not yet been called are worth a second look.
Counts also depend on filing dates. Companies House records are dated by when they were filed or registered, not by when a seller first sees them, so a quiet week can be followed by a catch-up. Treat one week as a reading, not a trend.
Where to spend the week
Hiring is the strongest signal this week by volume. The 508 significant roles are a reason to call recruitment agencies' clients, payroll and HR software sellers, and anyone whose product helps a growing team. The 121 first-of-function hires are narrower and often more useful: a company hiring its first person in a function is usually about to buy tools, services and advice for that function.
The 81 contract awards and 11 contracts ending are small numbers, so each one deserves a proper look. A supplier that has just won work may need subcontractors, equipment or staff. A contract that is ending may be going back to the market.
The 31,634 director changes are the largest count but the least specific. Most are routine. Narrow them by role, sector and company size before treating any as a reason to call.
How the counts are made
Each figure counts records in Lockley's index dated within the stated week. Companies House records come from the officer and charges registers. Contract records come from Contracts Finder and Find a Tender. Job postings come from Adzuna. Planning records come from planning registers. Funding rounds come from Companies House and public announcements. The week to 20 October 2026 runs 13 October 2026 to 20 October 2026, and the week before runs 6 October 2026 to 13 October 2026.
