In the week 4 to 11 October 2026, director changes filed at Companies House fell from 56,830 to 38,382 and new charges from 9,702 to 1,980, while planning-register new sites rose from 39 to 483. Public contracts awarded rose from 132 to 171. These are Lockley's week-on-week counts from UK public records, dated by the date on each record.
What fell
Companies House activity was lower across the board. Director changes fell from 56,830 to 38,382, and new charges fell sharply, from 9,702 to 1,980. A charge is security a lender takes over a company's assets, so a drop in registrations means fewer fresh lending events to call about, but it does not tell you the lending market has changed. Charge counts have swung widely before; our guide to why weekly signal counts swing explains how to read that before changing who you call.
Hiring signals fell too. Significant roles posted dropped from 680 to 301, and first-of-function hires from 150 to 96. Both come from job postings, so they follow what employers advertise and when. For a recruiter or a managed service provider, a smaller week means a shorter list, not a worse one: each remaining posting is still a dated record you can open and read.
What rose
New sites recorded in planning registers rose from 39 to 483, the largest jump in the table. Planning data is uneven, because it sits with local planning authorities and depends on when each publishes, so a single week can move a long way. Public contracts awarded rose from 132 to 171, which gives suppliers a fresh set of named winners to research.
Funding rounds were close to flat, 530 against 553, and 138 expansions were reported in public news. The expansion count comes from GDELT, a news-monitoring project, so a reported expansion should be confirmed on the company's own site or filings before you rely on it.
How to use the week's numbers
Do not chase the biggest number. Ask which signal matches what you sell, then work that list. An insurance broker may care most about new sites and charges, a recruiter about significant roles and first hires, and a supplier to the public sector about awards and endings. A smaller list that fits your offer beats a large list that does not.
For each company, open the source record, confirm the company number and the date, and write one factual line about what changed. Our guide to checking a buying signal before you call covers that routine.
Method and caveats
Each count uses the date on the record, covering 4 October 2026 to 11 October 2026, with the prior week running from 27 September 2026 to 4 October 2026. Counts can be revised as registers publish late filings, so figures on earlier weekly pages may differ slightly from those here for overlapping dates. Lockley reads these registers nightly and links each finding to the record it came from.
