How do I find newly formed UK companies in a specific sector?
Filter the free Companies House advanced search by SIC code and incorporation date, then read each company's site. New companies are a starting point; a recent record tells you which to ring first.
Written from Lockley's index and the sources below, updated 10 October 2026.
The free route is Companies House's advanced company search. You filter by SIC code (the industry code a company files), by incorporation date and by status, and it returns the companies that match. That gives you a list of newly formed companies in a sector. It does not tell you which of them is worth ringing this week, which is where other public records come in.
Step 1: choose the SIC codes
Every UK company files one or more Standard Industrial Classification codes. Pick the codes that match who you sell to. Be generous: companies often pick a code loosely, and a newly formed software firm may file under a general consultancy code. Check the neighbouring codes before you commit.
Lockley's sector pages group related codes into sectors and quote the number of active companies and how many were formed in the last twelve months. For example, its software and IT services page lists 336,621 active companies, 67,936 of them formed in the last twelve months. Use those pages to sense-check the scale you should expect.
Step 2: filter by date and status
In Companies House advanced search, set an incorporation date range. Independent guides describe the tool as free, without registration, and able to combine several criteria such as SIC code, location, status and dates. Choose active companies, and a window that suits your sales cycle, such as the last 30 or 90 days.
Be realistic about what a brand-new company is. Many are shells, holding vehicles or one-person companies that never trade. Companies House does not verify the information filed, so treat the list as a starting point.
Step 3: separate real businesses from shells
A new company with no website, no hires and no premises is rarely worth a call. Look for evidence that it is operating: a website on record, named directors and people, job adverts, a registered charge, or a premises. Lockley's index puts the scale of this in perspective: 5,567,699 active UK companies, of which 606,470 have a website on record, and 261,998 have a company card written from reading that website.
Step 4: choose a reason to call
Once you have a list, rank it by what has happened since formation. A first senior hire, a new charge or a new site each say the company is moving. Lockley reads Companies House, Contracts Finder and Find a Tender, job postings, planning registers and company websites every night and links each finding to its record, so you can see which companies on a sector list have something recent.
Common mistakes
Three errors waste the most time. First, relying on one SIC code: a company can file several, and the first listed is not always the main activity. Second, treating incorporation date as start of trading: a company can be formed months before it takes a customer, or be an old shell given a new name. Third, calling the registered office contact: the registered address is often an accountant or formation company, not the place the business operates. Cross-check the website and the directors before you ring.
Keep a note of why each company is on your list. If the sole reason is that it was formed last month, it belongs at the bottom. If it was formed last month and has since advertised a senior role or registered a charge, it moves up. That is the habit that turns a register extract into a call list.
